Suicides decreased in Dominican Republic

In 2002 around 670 suicides occurred in Dominican Republic, 50 less than in 2001. In Dominican Republic, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Dominican Republic reported 7.77 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 670 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 560 were men suicides and 110 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 12.54 per 100,000 men and for women 2.55 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Dominican Republic. However, in Dominican Republic in 2002 there were there were 1,279 homicides, and therefore, number of deaths by murder is far greater than people to take their own lives. There were 1.9 homicides per suicide.
