Suicides decreased in Costa Rica

In 2019 around 384 suicides occurred in Costa Rica, 7 less than in 2018. In Costa Rica, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Costa Rica reported 7.6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.37 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 384 recorded suicide cases in 2019, 332 were men suicides and 52 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 13 per 100,000 men and for women 2.1 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2019 there were there were 563 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.5 homicides per suicide.
