In 1978 around 1,862 suicides occurred in Austria, 35 more than in 1977. In 1978, on average 5 Austrians committed suicide every day.

Austria has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 1,862 recorded suicide cases in 1978, 1,294 were men suicides and 568 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 36.2 per 100,000 men and for women 14.2 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
