Suriname has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 134 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 109 were men suicides and 25 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 43.64 per 100,000 men and for women 10.22 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Suriname suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 57 homicides in Suriname, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.4 suicides.
