In 2002 occurred 1,212 suicides in Portugal. This year, 451 more people committed suicide than in 2001. In 2002, on average 3 Portuguese committed suicide every day.

Portugal had 11.6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10.78 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 1,212 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 947 were men suicides and 265 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 18.8 per 100,000 men and for women 4.9 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 119 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 10.2 suicides.
