In Portugal there were 5.1 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.98 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Of the 525 recorded suicide cases in 2000, 418 were men suicides and 107 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.4 per 100,000 men and for women 2 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 116 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.5 suicides.
