Number of suicides falls in Latvia

In 2003 occurred 604 suicides in Latvia. This year, 66 fewer people committed suicide than in 2002. In Latvia, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Latvia had 26.4 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.69 suicides per 100,000 people.

Latvia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 604 recorded suicide cases in 2003, 482 were men suicides and 122 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 45.9 per 100,000 men and for women 9.9 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 202 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3 suicides.
