By 2003, suicides in India increased by 2,636 people to at 196,287 suicides In 2003, on average 538 Indians committed suicide every day.

In India there were 17.66 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.69 suicides per 100,000 people.

India is a country with a high rate of suicide.

Of the 196,287 recorded suicide cases in 2003, 107,323 were men suicides and 88,964 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 18.56 per 100,000 men and for women 16.5 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In India suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 44,331 homicides in India, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.4 suicides.
