Suicides decreased in Greece

In 2019 around 530 suicides occurred in Greece, 37 less than in 2018. In Greece, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Greece reported 4.81 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.37 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 530 recorded suicide cases in 2019, 438 were men suicides and 92 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.19 per 100,000 men and for women 1.62 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Greece suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 78 homicides in Greece, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 6.8 suicides.
