Number of suicides increases in Ecuador

In 2003 around 938 suicides occurred in Ecuador, 119 more than in 2002. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Ecuador reported 7.04 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.69 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 938 recorded suicide cases in 2003, 642 were men suicides and 297 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 9.63 per 100,000 men and for women 4.47 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Ecuador. However, in Ecuador in 2003 there were there were 1,937 homicides, and therefore, number of deaths by murder is far greater than people to take their own lives. There were 2.1 homicides per suicide.
