Costa Rica had 7.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.69 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Of the 317 recorded suicide cases in 2003, 264 were men suicides and 53 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 12.8 per 100,000 men and for women 2.6 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Costa Rica suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 300 homicides in Costa Rica, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.1 suicides.
