Suicides grow in Costa Rica

By 2002, suicides in Costa Rica increased by 75 people to at 281 suicides

In Costa Rica there were 7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 281 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 241 were men suicides and 40 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11.8 per 100,000 men and for women 2 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Costa Rica suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 258 homicides in Costa Rica, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.1 suicides.
