Number of suicides increases in Costa Rica

In 2000 around 242 suicides occurred in Costa Rica, 9 more than in 1999.

Costa Rica reported 6.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.98 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 242 recorded suicide cases in 2000, 214 were men suicides and 28 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 10.9 per 100,000 men and for women 1.5 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2000 there were there were 249 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1 homicides per suicide.
