In 2002 occurred 1,603 suicides in Chile. This year, 22 fewer people committed suicide than in 2001. In 2002, on average 4 Chileans committed suicide every day.

Chile had 10.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 1,603 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 1,357 were men suicides and 246 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 17.6 per 100,000 men and for women 3.1 per 100,000 female.
