The monetary base (M0) is the most liquid monetary aggregate of those that make up the money supply. It consists of cash, i.e., coins and banknotes in circulation, plus deposits held by banks at the central bank. It is the smallest monetary aggregate and therefore the one over which central banks can exercise the greatest control when undertaking monetary policy measures.
