In Sri Lanka there were 27.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10 suicides per 100,000 people.
Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 5,574 recorded suicide cases in 2009, 4,375 were men suicides and 1,199 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 44.56 per 100,000 men and for women 11.63 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 1,099 homicides in Sri Lanka, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 5.1 suicides.
