Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate

In 2008 around 5,581 suicides occurred in Sri Lanka, 3 less than in 2007. In 2008, on average 15 Sri Lankans committed suicide every day.

Sri Lanka reported 27.93 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.96 suicides per 100,000 people.

Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 5,581 recorded suicide cases in 2008, 4,327 were men suicides and 1,254 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 44.26 per 100,000 men and for women 12.28 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 2,002 homicides in Sri Lanka, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.8 suicides.
