Number of suicides falls in Papua New Guinea

In 2002 occurred 583 suicides in Papua New Guinea. This year, 19 fewer people committed suicide than in 2001. In Papua New Guinea, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Papua New Guinea had 10.84 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10.78 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 583 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 420 were men suicides and 163 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 13.67 per 100,000 men and for women 5.79 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Papua New Guinea suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 470 homicides in Papua New Guinea, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.2 suicides.
