In 2004 around 563 suicides occurred in Latvia, 41 less than in 2003. In Latvia, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.
Latvia reported 24.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.53 suicides per 100,000 people.
Latvia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 563 recorded suicide cases in 2004, 457 were men suicides and 106 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 44 per 100,000 men and for women 8.7 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 181 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.1 suicides.
