Number of suicides increases in Ireland

In 2004 around 464 suicides occurred in Ireland, 10 more than in 2003. In Ireland, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Ireland reported 11.4 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10.53 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 464 recorded suicide cases in 2004, 390 were men suicides and 74 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 19.2 per 100,000 men and for women 3.6 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Ireland suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 30 homicides in Ireland, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 15.5 suicides.
