In 2000 occurred 6,779 suicides in Brazil. This year, 249 more people committed suicide than in 1999. In 2000, on average 19 Brazilians committed suicide every day.

Brazil had 3.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.98 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 6,779 recorded suicide cases in 2000, 5,397 were men suicides and 1,382 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 6.3 per 100,000 men and for women 1.6 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Brazil. However, in Brazil in 2000 there were there were 45,375 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 6.7 homicides per suicide.
