Number of suicides falls in Uruguay

In 2004 occurred 513 suicides in Uruguay. This year, 13 fewer people committed suicide than in 2003. In Uruguay, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Uruguay had 15.35 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10.53 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 513 recorded suicide cases in 2004, 404 were men suicides and 108 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 25.3 per 100,000 men and for women 6.31 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Uruguay suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 200 homicides in Uruguay, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.6 suicides.
