Number of suicides increases in Uruguay

In 2002 around 665 suicides occurred in Uruguay, 177 more than in 2001. In Uruguay, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Uruguay reported 19.88 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.78 suicides per 100,000 people.

Uruguay is a country with a high rate of suicide.

Of the 665 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 521 were men suicides and 144 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 32.6 per 100,000 men and for women 8.45 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Uruguay suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 231 homicides in Uruguay, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.9 suicides.
