South Africa has a low suicide rate

In 2008 around 442 suicides occurred in South Africa, 22 more than in 2007. In South Africa, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

South Africa reported 0.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.96 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 442 recorded suicide cases in 2008, 346 were men suicides and 96 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 1.4 per 100,000 men and for women 0.4 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in South Africa. However, in South Africa in 2008 there were there were 18,084 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 40.9 homicides per suicide.
