South Africa has a low suicide rate

In 2001 around 385 suicides occurred in South Africa, 118 more than in 2000. In South Africa, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

South Africa reported 0.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.88 self-harm per 100.000 people.

South Africa has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 385 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 313 were men suicides and 72 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 1.4 per 100,000 men and for women 0.3 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in South Africa. However, in South Africa in 2001 there were there were 21,405 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 55.6 homicides per suicide.
