South Africa has the lowest suicide rate in the world

In 1997 around 104 suicides occurred in South Africa, 40 less than in 1996.

South Africa reported 0.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 14.89 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 104 recorded suicide cases in 1997, 82 were men suicides and 22 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 0.4 per 100,000 men and for women 0.1 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in South Africa. However, in South Africa in 1997 there were there were 24,486 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 235.4 homicides per suicide.
