Number of suicides increases in Malawi

In 2008 around 722 suicides occurred in Malawi, 12 more than in 2007. In Malawi, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Malawi reported 4.86 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.96 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 722 recorded suicide cases in 2008, 573 were men suicides and 149 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.54 per 100,000 men and for women 2.07 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Malawi. However, in Malawi in 2008 there were there were 780 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.1 homicides per suicide.
