In 1997 occurred 23,494 suicides in Japan. This year, 1,356 more people committed suicide than in 1996. In 1997, on average 64 Japanese committed suicide every day.

Japan had 18.6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 14.89 suicides per 100,000 people.

Japan has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 23,494 recorded suicide cases in 1997, 15,901 were men suicides and 7,593 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 25.7 per 100,000 men and for women 11.8 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Japan suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 710 homicides in Japan, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 33.1 suicides.
