Number of suicides increases in Ireland

In 2000 around 463 suicides occurred in Ireland, 39 more than in 1999. In Ireland, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Ireland reported 12.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10.98 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 463 recorded suicide cases in 2000, 381 were men suicides and 82 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 20.1 per 100,000 men and for women 4.3 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Ireland suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 37 homicides in Ireland, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 12.5 suicides.
