Suicides increase in Ireland

In 1998 occurred 498 suicides in Ireland. This year, 32 more people committed suicide than in 1997. In Ireland, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Ireland had 13.4 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 14.84 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Ireland, has a relatively low rate of suicide per inhabitants.

Of the 498 recorded suicide cases in 1998, 425 were men suicides and 73 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 23 per 100,000 men and for women 3.9 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Ireland suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 38 homicides in Ireland, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 13.1 suicides.
