In 1978 around 1,200 suicides occurred in Finland, 22 less than in 1977. In 1978, on average 3 Finns committed suicide every day.

Finland reported 25.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 12.98 suicides per 100,000 people.

Finland has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 1,200 recorded suicide cases in 1978, 963 were men suicides and 237 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 41.9 per 100,000 men and for women 9.7 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
