Suriname has a very high suicide rate

By 2009, suicides in Suriname remained at 142 suicides

In Suriname there were 27.18 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10 suicides per 100,000 people.

Suriname has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 142 recorded suicide cases in 2009, 111 were men suicides and 32 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 40.81 per 100,000 men and for women 11.79 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Suriname suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 43 homicides in Suriname, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.3 suicides.
