In 2009 around 1,026 suicides occurred in Portugal, 12 less than in 2008. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.
Portugal reported 9.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Of the 1,026 recorded suicide cases in 2009, 804 were men suicides and 222 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 15.9 per 100,000 men and for women 4 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 130 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 7.9 suicides.
