In 1998 around 556 suicides occurred in Portugal, 72 less than in 1997. In Portugal, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.
Portugal reported 5.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 14.84 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Portugal has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 556 recorded suicide cases in 1998, 416 were men suicides and 140 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.5 per 100,000 men and for women 2.7 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 125 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.4 suicides.
