Suicides grow in Latvia

By 2008, suicides in Latvia increased by 73 people to at 527 suicides In Latvia, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

In Latvia there were 24.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.96 suicides per 100,000 people.

Latvia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 527 recorded suicide cases in 2008, 427 were men suicides and 100 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 42.7 per 100,000 men and for women 8.5 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 99 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 5.3 suicides.
