Latvia has a very high suicide rate

In 1998 occurred 840 suicides in Latvia. This year, 48 fewer people committed suicide than in 1997. On average, there are 2 suicides per day.

Latvia had 34.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 14.84 suicides per 100,000 people.

Latvia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 840 recorded suicide cases in 1998, 678 were men suicides and 162 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 61.1 per 100,000 men and for women 12.5 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 250 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.4 suicides.
