Guyana has a very high suicide rate

In 2009 around 200 suicides occurred in Guyana, 41 more than in 2008.

Guyana reported 26.64 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10 suicides per 100,000 people.

Guyana has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 200 recorded suicide cases in 2009, 137 were men suicides and 63 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 36.77 per 100,000 men and for women 16.58 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Guyana suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 117 homicides in Guyana, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.7 suicides.
