Number of suicides falls in Guyana

In 2008 occurred 159 suicides in Guyana. This year, 32 fewer people committed suicide than in 2007.

Guyana had 21.26 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.96 suicides per 100,000 people.

Guyana has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 159 recorded suicide cases in 2008, 113 were men suicides and 46 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 30.17 per 100,000 men and for women 12.07 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Guyana suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 158 homicides in Guyana, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1 suicides.
