Suicides increase in Estonia

In 2009 occurred 269 suicides in Estonia. This year, 27 more people committed suicide than in 2008.

Estonia had 20.1 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10 suicides per 100,000 people.

Estonia is a country with a high rate of suicide.

Of the 269 recorded suicide cases in 2009, 220 were men suicides and 49 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 35.3 per 100,000 men and for women 6.8 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Estonia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 70 homicides in Estonia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.8 suicides.
