Estonia has a very high suicide rate

In 1998 occurred 482 suicides in Estonia. This year, 43 fewer people committed suicide than in 1997. In Estonia, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Estonia had 34.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 14.84 suicides per 100,000 people.

Estonia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 482 recorded suicide cases in 1998, 401 were men suicides and 81 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 62.7 per 100,000 men and for women 10.9 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Estonia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 196 homicides in Estonia, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.5 suicides.
