In Costa Rica there were 5.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.88 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Of the 206 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 177 were men suicides and 29 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.8 per 100,000 men and for women 1.5 per 100,000 female.
Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2001 there were there were 257 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.2 homicides per suicide.
