Number of suicides increases in Costa Rica

In 1999 around 233 suicides occurred in Costa Rica, 10 more than in 1998.

Costa Rica reported 6.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 14.31 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Costa Rica has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 233 recorded suicide cases in 1999, 210 were men suicides and 23 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11 per 100,000 men and for women 1.2 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 1999 there were there were 245 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.1 homicides per suicide.
