Suicides increase in Costa Rica

In 1998 occurred 223 suicides in Costa Rica. This year, 35 more people committed suicide than in 1997.

Costa Rica had 6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 14.84 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Costa Rica has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 223 recorded suicide cases in 1998, 200 were men suicides and 23 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 10.7 per 100,000 men and for women 1.3 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 1998 there were there were 224 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1 homicides per suicide.
