In 2009 around 2,148 suicides occurred in Chile, 60 more than in 2008. In 2009, on average 6 Chileans committed suicide every day.

Chile reported 12.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 2,148 recorded suicide cases in 2009, 1,724 were men suicides and 424 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 20.8 per 100,000 men and for women 4.9 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Chile suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 630 homicides in Chile, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.4 suicides.
