In 1998 around 1,031 suicides occurred in Chile, 121 more than in 1997. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Chile reported 6.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 14.84 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Chile has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 1,031 recorded suicide cases in 1998, 899 were men suicides and 132 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 12.2 per 100,000 men and for women 1.7 per 100,000 female.
