In 1980 around 2,181 suicides occurred in Belgium, 67 more than in 1979. In 1980, on average 6 Belgians committed suicide every day.

Belgium reported 22.1 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 14.29 suicides per 100,000 people.

Belgium has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 2,181 recorded suicide cases in 1980, 1,373 were men suicides and 808 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 28.5 per 100,000 men and for women 16 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
