Number of suicides increases in Trinidad and Tobago

In 2008 around 187 suicides occurred in Trinidad and Tobago, 52 more than in 2007.

Trinidad and Tobago reported 14.22 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 9.96 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 187 recorded suicide cases in 2008, 150 were men suicides and 37 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 21.77 per 100,000 men and for women 5.27 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Trinidad and Tobago. However, in Trinidad and Tobago in 2008 there were there were 547 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 2.9 homicides per suicide.
