Number of suicides increases in Papua New Guinea

In 2009 around 631 suicides occurred in Papua New Guinea, 70 more than in 2008. In Papua New Guinea, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Papua New Guinea reported 9.96 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 631 recorded suicide cases in 2009, 500 were men suicides and 131 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 13.05 per 100,000 men and for women 3.72 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Papua New Guinea. However, in Papua New Guinea in 2009 there were there were 697 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.1 homicides per suicide.
