Suicides increase in Papua New Guinea

In 2001 occurred 602 suicides in Papua New Guinea. This year, 17 more people committed suicide than in 2000. In Papua New Guinea, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Papua New Guinea had 11.45 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10.88 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 602 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 448 were men suicides and 154 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 15.06 per 100,000 men and for women 5.66 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Papua New Guinea suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 436 homicides in Papua New Guinea, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.4 suicides.
