Lithuania has the highest suicide rate in the world

In 1997 occurred 1,632 suicides in Lithuania. This year, 91 fewer people committed suicide than in 1996. In 1997, on average 4 Lithuanians committed suicide every day.

Lithuania had 45.6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 14.89 suicides per 100,000 people.

Lithuania has the highest suicide rate in the world.

Of the 1,632 recorded suicide cases in 1997, 1,348 were men suicides and 284 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 80.3 per 100,000 men and for women 15 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Lithuania suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 391 homicides in Lithuania, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.2 suicides.
